  • Travel Deals

Some travel tips for those of you yearning for a little international adventure.

Passport features a story on Amanresorts, which is cutting the rates of its Sri Lankan luxury hotels in half until 2008. Of course, there is a catch…

For the traveller who would rather avoid a warzone (not sure why, but…) you may enjoy a [...]

  • Ramen… from another Galaxy

On a recent bike tour of northern Tokyo with Darin, we stopped for lunch at a peculiar ramen store for a late lunch. The blackboard menu out front instantly caught our eye because the way the servings were portioned up:

    Translation:

    Small: 1 serving
    Medium: 1.5 servings
    Large: 2 servings
    Earth: 3 servings
    Galaxy: 4 servings
    Universe: 5 servings
    Big Bang: 7 [...]

  • Tokyo Earthquake Diary, 1923

Thanks to Joe for sending this link, the diary of an American on his trip to Japan during the summer of 1923. The diary is fascinating standing alone, but even more interesting considering the entry for September 1, when the Great Kanto Earthquake struck Tokyo and killed approximately 136,000.

At Imperial Hotel Tokyo. Was talking [...]

This time Foreign Policy magazine lists the world’s most overrated summer travel destinations. I totally second Badaling, the only good part was the end (see the last photo in this gallery from this post).

  • Off on a trip to Hokkaido

I will be spending the next ten days cycling around Japan’s northernmost island of Hokkaido with family. Regular readers may recall that I did a similar trip last year, and some pictures of the beautiful flora and fauna were posted shortly thereafter here.

The map of the recent trip and the planned trip can be [...]

  • To Bavaria and Back

I’m back from another weekend in Munich, some of it spent hiking near Tegernsee. Here are a few quick pictures for you vicarious travelers out there.

  • On New Jersey, 1926

Has anything changed? From a travel book on the United States published in 1926:

The symptoms have changed, but the case remains incurable. For to-day New Jersey is still a joke state. Outsiders think of her as the State where they suffer from billboarditis and ride on the Erie and harbor the corporations and broadcast [...]

  • Travelogue Teaser

To keep a long story short, I’m in America for two weeks now visiting family. After Montenegro I went briefly to Croatia and then on to Germany having decided to skip Bosnia (which I’ve already been) in favor of spending the extra money I had (and didn’t expect to still have) on a flight home. [...]
