Seeing Yet More Hope in All the Anarchy

In the latest post on this occasional series of spotting hope while traveling through anarchy—previously noted here and here—I present to you this reincarnation of Tupak… in Kazakhstan! This video was assembled from clips taken during a 3,000 mile road trip through Kazakhstan into Mongolia for Mongol Rally 2009. Read more at www.rubikcrew.com.

Now, now; if the videographers were encountering McDonalds restaurants instead of these rap imitators, wouldn't you be going on about cultural imperialism instead?

No, I would not.

But you can oppose McDonald's and not this Kazakh Tupac song because the cultural influence of the two are fundamentally different.

McDonald's is a profit-generating global business that is aggressively expanding into all corners of the globe through subsidiaries and franchises and imbibing the world with low-quality American fast food cuisine.

Tupac is a musician who's work is being sung by people who either knew the tune or were asked to sing it, without impacting their wallets, native culture, or personal nutrition. I think it says something about the universalism of music, and humanity.

You can read my own encounter with Russian pop music that was popular in Kazakhstan back in 2005, "Euroasia," about renewing Russian conquest of the continent, in this previous post:
