The Folly of Martyrdom

The top Somali Islamist was just killed in an airstrike. This is what the spokesman for the Islamic al-Shabab militia, Sheik Muqtar Robow, had to say:

“Our brother martyr Aden Hashi, has received what he was looking for — death for the sake of Allah — at the hands of the United States.”

Only too happy to be of service, I’m sure.

Did you read Lawrence Wright's book, _The Looming Tower_? In it, he describes Saudi al-Qaeda members "fighting" in Afghanistan with the mujahideen, trying to expell the Soviets. When Soviets helicopter gunships or airplanes flew overhead, the Afghans would hunker down to wait until the aircraft were gone. The Saudis would pour out into the open and stand in plain view, in the hope of becoming martyrs. The Afghans thought they were nuts.
