This morning, as the bright Japanese sun shone through the window, I rolled out of bed and grabbed my Macbook. Last night’s Colbert Report had been downloaded, I had a couple of dozen emails and a few hundred RSS items.
I took the Macbook into the kitchen to brew some coffee and check Facebook. There were some comments on a recently uploaded photo of mine by some friends who I haven’t met in the flesh in almost 10 years.
In my Facebook Inbox there was a note from a university buddy, thanking me for recommending some software for organizing and annotating academic journal PDFs. These apps were useful for my research since I couldn’t pack around a lot of papers and books. Both my library and my antilibrary are mostly digital.
I fired an email to the Canadian embassy in Tokyo to set up a meet, and an invoice to a consulting company in New York that I did some work for recently. Finally, I rang my parents in Canada on Skype, but they were out, so I went to work.
Once at the office I uploaded my quarterly performance review to Google Docs, since I knew I would have to work on it bit by bit from different computers throughout the day. I also kept my iPod touch close at hand so I could keep up with the water cooler chat on Twitter.
At lunch I downloaded the digital edition of the recent Foreign Policy. The only paper magazine I get is The Economist, however I have been on the road and haven’t been receiving my copies. On my walk home I listened to the audio version of last week’s special report on mobility, wireless communication and the new nomadism. The report is well worth your time, wherever you are and through whatever medium you prefer.
