I think the Muslim/Christian point of comparison is a red herring. The reaction to the Danish publication is really a clash between modernity and an alternate modernity; or perhaps rather two postmodernities (with one continuing down the Enlightenment or humanist/secular path, and the other in what people are calling the “Islamist” movement. I doubt that it’s really about two faith communities such as Christians and Muslims. While “post-modern” and “Islamism” seem like a strange match, I think that there is a lot of room for questioning along those lines.

First of all, it would be interesting to know whether the death threats were carried out by Christians, Muslims, or other. Some Muslims would be quite offended at the picture.

Second of all, I disagree that it would only be similar if it were done by a Muslim. As far as I know, the cartoons in question were done by a secular, non-practicing individual, not a Christian. So in that sense, it is equivalent.

Third of all, I would say that regarding each of the individuals making the death threats, that their reactions are equivalent to the reactions of those who made death threats to the Danish cartoonists.

But the volume and societal response cannot be compared. Even if some priest did try to whip up holy fury among Christians, it wouldn’t work. We are used to having Jesus shit upon. We don’t expect everyone to worship him- he’s been the whipping boy for quite some time. That’s part of the point.

Religious reactioism is what it is, but don’t forget that the Danish cartoons brouhaha was deliberately fomented – the publication of some of the cartoons in an Egyptian newspaper some time previous to the riots didn’t cause much of a reaction.

It seems to me that the content here is not the same. This isn’t a political cartoon but punk poster. The cartoons were a political statement in and of themselves, made by the press. It seems to me that this poster is being commandeered for political purposes. I think Sigvardsson is trying to compare apples to oranges.

To be comparable I think it would need to be a Moslem doing the desecration. Also, I don’t think there is anything more offensive than defecation so it would need to be a defecation a defecation.

In this case it’s westerners desecrating their own religious symbols. It really is too bad that Islam never had their “Reformation” and “Enlightenment” so they could be about the business of desecrating their own symbols. They can produce “desecrators” such as Rushdie and even a Tariq Ali who, while not a desecrator, doesn’t have a lot of respect for religion, but the fundamentalists don’t take it very well. Both religions have their fundamentalists, it’s just that the Enlightenment knocked our fundamentalists down a peg or two.

I wonder how it is that the west hasn’t found the opportunity to produce a “piss Mohammad”. Allah knows that’s when the sh*t will hit the fan.
