Can anyone who speaks Swedish get me a pic of this poster?
Editor threatened over Jesus defecation poster
The editor of a Swedish newspaper has received death threats for publishing a picture of Jesus being defecated on by the devil. Östgöta Correspondenten editor Ola Sigvardsson has received several death threats since the publication of the picture, which featured on posters for a punk festival. ... Sigvardsson has, among other things, been threatened with having his throat cut.
Question for our readers: is this comparable to the Mohammad controversy in Denmark?

Thanks to all that sent it in.

Jesus Reyes added these pithy words on 11 Mar 08 at 2:55 amI think it’s in the same ballpark, that is, the desecration of a religious symbol for a political statement or gain.
To be comparable I think it would need to be a Moslem doing the desecration. Also, I don’t think there is anything more offensive than defecation so it would need to be a defecation a defecation.
In this case it’s westerners desecrating their own religious symbols. It really is too bad that Islam never had their “Reformation” and “Enlightenment” so they could be about the business of desecrating their own symbols. They can produce “desecrators” such as Rushdie and even a Tariq Ali who, while not a desecrator, doesn’t have a lot of respect for religion, but the fundamentalists don’t take it very well. Both religions have their fundamentalists, it’s just that the Enlightenment knocked our fundamentalists down a peg or two.
I wonder how it is that the west hasn’t found the opportunity to produce a “piss Mohammad”. Allah knows that’s when the sh*t will hit the fan.
Anyway, got to run, South Park’s coming up. Maybe they will have some scat on tonight.

dj added these pithy words on 11 Mar 08 at 7:12 amIs the reaction comparable? Give me a break, is this a joke?
Curzon added these pithy words on 11 Mar 08 at 9:25 amYeah—isolated death threats from an individual or small group just isn’t comparable to mass protests in the streets.
Younghusband added these pithy words on 11 Mar 08 at 5:33 pmI don’t think the reaction is comparable at all. What I am wondering is if the publication of this poster is comparable to the publication of the Mohammad cartoons.
It seems to me that the content here is not the same. This isn’t a political cartoon but punk poster. The cartoons were a political statement in and of themselves, made by the press. It seems to me that this poster is being commandeered for political purposes. I think Sigvardsson is trying to compare apples to oranges.
Evie added these pithy words on 11 Mar 08 at 9:45 pmThe potential “offense level” may be comparable, but the difference is that most Christians will merely choose to not look at it and let it pass out of their minds as though it had never happened. They’re pretty good at that. Like, ya know, dinosaur bones and evolution.
gacetillero added these pithy words on 12 Mar 08 at 1:13 amIt could become comparable if a bunch of priests decide to do a tour of Christian communities in a couple of months with a photocopy of this poster and a photocopy of a French man dressed as a pig for an obscure festival emblazoned with the words ‘This is how the Swedish depict Jesus’.
Religious reactioism is what it is, but don’t forget that the Danish cartoons brouhaha was deliberately fomented – the publication of some of the cartoons in an Egyptian newspaper some time previous to the riots didn’t cause much of a reaction.
Younghusband added these pithy words on 12 Mar 08 at 4:31 amAs far as the reaction is concerned, Evie you nailed it. However reactionaries are not what concern me. I am not here to compare which bunch of crazies is crazier than the other. I think that the publication of the poster as some sort of attempt at “equal time” is misguided. Am I misguided for thinking so?

Elizabeth added these pithy words on 15 Mar 08 at 12:01 pmIn terms of blasphemy, yes. In terms of reaction, no.
First of all, it would be interesting to know whether the death threats were carried out by Christians, Muslims, or other. Some Muslims would be quite offended at the picture.
Second of all, I disagree that it would only be similar if it were done by a Muslim. As far as I know, the cartoons in question were done by a secular, non-practicing individual, not a Christian. So in that sense, it is equivalent.
Third of all, I would say that regarding each of the individuals making the death threats, that their reactions are equivalent to the reactions of those who made death threats to the Danish cartoonists.
But the volume and societal response cannot be compared. Even if some priest did try to whip up holy fury among Christians, it wouldn’t work. We are used to having Jesus shit upon. We don’t expect everyone to worship him- he’s been the whipping boy for quite some time. That’s part of the point.
von Kaufman-Turkestansky added these pithy words on 16 Mar 08 at 4:36 pmSorry about the facetious comment before, since the subject is of course serious.
I think the Muslim/Christian point of comparison is a red herring. The reaction to the Danish publication is really a clash between modernity and an alternate modernity; or perhaps rather two postmodernities (with one continuing down the Enlightenment or humanist/secular path, and the other in what people are calling the “Islamist” movement. I doubt that it’s really about two faith communities such as Christians and Muslims. While “post-modern” and “Islamism” seem like a strange match, I think that there is a lot of room for questioning along those lines.
Here is an article (that I am not endorsing, mostly because I don’t like the style; just using as food for thought)

R. Elgin added these pithy words on 18 Mar 08 at 4:56 pmDag, what poster! If they wanted to be really naughty, they could have used G.W. Bush’s face instead of the cliche Jesus there. I wonder if anyone would consider that sacrilegious: Bush co-opting a Jesus pose.
T. Havenwood added these pithy words on 22 Mar 08 at 11:39 amIsn’t childish and one-dimensional nose-thumbing at Christianity (in particular) a bit, well, boring and tiresome at this point?
Me? I’m an agnostic, and could care less about such displays of juvenile foolishness.
Oh, and gotta add, how “Christian” to threaten “the messenger” with a good ol’ fashioned THROAT CUTTING!
