Perhaps they have fewer of them, but give them more food per capita.
Or, perhaps the older guards were actually chopped up and fed to their successors, as a source of protein otherwise not available in NK.

The 2007 version looks as if he would defend the great leader with his fists. Perhaps Kim sold the pistols in the US for cash and needed bigger guys?
