Today marks our third anniversary of blogging—happy birthday to us! The authors of this blog have grown since we first started this blog, the most important life changes being that in a period of 18 months, first Younghusband, then myself, and most recently Chirol all married the loves of our lives!
While we admire the Victorians of the 19th century and share much in common with the hard realistic thinking of that age, we differ culturally in many ways. How so? Although Younghusband, Curzon and Chirol traveled across the globe, marrying outside of European stock during the Victorian age was very much tabboo (although we understand that Younghusband’s second wife was Tibetan). In this regard, the three authors of this blog are very different: Younghusband and myself have both spent many years in Japan and married a Japanese national, and Chirol has spent many years in Germany and married a German national. Part of me imagines that our namesake historical figures would not approve in the context of the values of their age, but hopefully they’d understand that the world is always changing.
Here’s to more years of posting, further growth, and best to all our readers!

One certain improvement on the old-timers is the diminished significance attributed to race. There is much to admire about the old guys, but not that. However, there was very much to admire in the people of that age, and too little is known about, and what little is known is often wrong, about the Victorian and Edwardian era. Bluntly, in most ways, the best of them they were smarter, tougher-minded, better read, more truly cosmopolitan, braver and generally better men than the people who hold the reigns of power and strut the public stage in our own era. The more I read about those times, the more clear this is. Was it really World War I, with its slaughter of the sons of the elite, that caused the decay? It is hard to say what happened.
