Where not to go

We’ve given you the ten most dangerous holiday destinations of 2007 and some of the weirdest destinations to see. This time Foreign Policy magazine lists the world’s most overrated summer travel destinations. I totally second Badaling, the only good part was the end (see the last photo in this gallery from this post).

Well, if you do find yourself at the Great Wall and can climb a steep hill, there is a place where you can go either right or left. Left is flat and has the cast of thousands, but almost no one goes to the right. Checking your last photo, I'd guess you went the route less taken.

I will be going on a honeymoon next summer, my vote is for Scotland (don't know what her vote is yet). I guess I am not so adventurous as you folks heading off to Iraq on a lark...

Totally agree on Badaling. I go past there often, as the in-laws live in the same county (but, blessedly, far from any tourist trap), and even though I never got off the bus at Badaling, I can't see how it would be a good idea. Your average mid-summer view of Badaling as the bus approaches the tunnel from the south is the wall so completely covered in tourists I'm convinced the best view of the wall is from the bus window just before you enter the tunnel. How could you possibly see any thing of the wall if you're dumb enough to get off the bus and join the crowds? From my point of view, the only good part of Badaling is when the bus turns down the valley and heads for the county town.
