Britain officially drops “War on Terror” rhetoric.
Brown, it seems, has concluded that the war rhetoric employed by Blair was divisive, threatening social peace between communities in Britain, and counterproductive, making it harder to turn the British Muslim community into the security services’ eyes and ears. In other words, the Brown approach would be the approach of serious crime fighters around the world these days – community policing in which mutual trust is the cornerstone of crime prevention. In general, advocates of this approach avoid the rhetoric of war on the presumption that it only alienates the communities out of which criminals spring.
Britain takes the first step in redefining the battle instead of letting it be defined for us. A law enforcement perspective is far more credible and marketable than a military one, at least to the rest of the world. The question is whether Americans are ready for the change. As noted previously, it is time to declare victory in the WoT and move on. The threats won’t end and the men and women of our intelligence agencies, military and law enforcement will continue to work hard to protect Americans. But there are larger threats looming on the horizon and it’s time end our obsession with Islamic terrorism.

On a similar note, I’m glad to see that lighters are now allowed back on planes (although some so-called “experts,” who make their living off this type of nonsense, are worried). I hope liquids are next. When flying domestically in Japan, you can carry liquids on the plane, but all are checked with a brief chemical contents scan. Common sense and safety is the way to go: passengers need only arrive at the airport 20 minutes before departure, compared to 90 minutes as recommended by many airlines in the US.

Michael Hancock added these pithy words on 24 Jul 07 at 2:07 amI’ve been reading Coming-Anarchy for some time now, and while I often disagree, I never fault the reasoning of articles. Facts are facts, but it’s the interpretation that I sometimes differ with.
In this case, however, I am in one hundred percent agreement. There’s no reason not to declare victory now. While there’s hardly a reason to declare victory on any particular day, in a war against a noun, you can hardly hope for someone to step aboard a battleship and sign a treaty.
Policing the world sounds much, much better than fighting the ‘evil doers’ as long as our police are less corrupt than most of those found in heavier Eastern buearacracies. I’m sure I spelled that wrong.
Britain was good enough to follow us into the breach. Let us now take a turn and follow them against the new threats to our security. Our own war against Islamic Fundamentalism is becoming an extremism indistinguishable from jihad.

I hardly think Brown is operating here out of a rational approach to terrorism, but out of fear of his own radicalized Muslim minority. Dropping the “War on Terror” moniker will make many Westerners more receptive to the necessities of the fight, but I doubt it will make a significant difference in the communities that terrorists actually come from.

I, for one, have no trouble distinguishing the two, and this reads to me like equivalence for the sake of equivalence.
