Thank you to all the readers who contacted us to report that the site has been extremely slow and often gave 503 errors. After doing what I could to speed things up code-wise, I contacted support last week and finally got a reply today:
Sorry for the wait. We understand that the load on Nicola has been above average lately. Our system administrators are aware and have been monitoring the server. We also have a far more comprehensive plan in place: a new generation of shared servers with the Solaris operating system, a fraction of the number of users on each physical machine, memory limits and CPU limits per user (as opposed to per process) that are enforced by the operating system, disk compression, and the presence of advanced observability tools for us to see what is happening on each server on a per-user basis—not to mention reboot times of under five minutes for when things do go wrong. We are in limited beta right now and will enter public beta shortly and then begin the migration process.
Hopefully “shortly” is soon. Stay with us.

Alfred Russel Wallace added these pithy words on 23 Jun 07 at 2:36 amSounds pretty weasel-ish to me… I love phrases like “Our system administrators are aware and have been monitoring the server”. Why don’t they DO something?????
