1979 Part 2

Bloggers are all over the board on Iran’s capture of 15 British sailors, wondering if this is a rerun of American embassy hostage crisis. Allahpundit figures

… they’ll be released soon and the incident will be dismissed as a misunderstanding. Iran can’t have meant to do this, not with Ahmadinejad set to address the Security Council tomorrow about the nuclear program and not to the British, who’ve been adamant in opposing any military action on Iran.

Good point, but then Ahmadinejad goes and cancels his speech at the UN, citing visa problems. I don’t expect this crisis to last long, but then again nobody expected the 1979 event to last 444 days. The Iran of today is a divided one, with numerous internal struggles and a war on its border much like the Iran of the Revolution. We’ll just all have to hold our breath and see.

PS. The DangerRoom has pics of the crew of the HMS Cornwall.

The reference to 1979 brings back school memories of throwing paper wads at a photocopied image of a bullseye superimposed over the mug of the Ayatolla Khomeini and singing "Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran" to the tune of the Beach Boys hit "Barbara Ann."

Sounds fun, if I were a teacher I would try to get that game going again.
