He’s finally gone! Eddie and I discussed this during his visit and both decided to nominate Schwarzeneger for SecDef. Too bad he won reelection by a landslide.

Chirol's Travels to Tunisia
As a former CIA spymaster, the nominee Gates will certainly understand the value of intelligence matters…
so important follow-up question: How will Robert Gates fare and are all the Rumself-critics happy now or is it too soon to tell?

One way to get the Shias to understand about “Franchaise”Â?’ (aka – democracy) is for them to talk to the Sunnis and treat them as Iraqis.
A lesson has to be learnt by them to compromise, based on their own identity, not on religious terms. In my opinion “ËœFood’ – if they are hungry they cannot think about the ultimate reality. Shelter is getting hard to keep. And clothing too!
People listen if one addresses their concerns of their everyday life. It seems to have come to that in Iraq.
Give, that our own Evangelical Christians have seen the need for the compromise and not take their message of resurrection, relevance of their being in this world, the right thing to do as Americans and still staying with their chosen path in the recent elections shows the kind of accommodation.
“You are with us or you are against us”Â? ““ for almost 1/12 of our life on this planet, is divisive.
Both sides may back off and let the center, sort out. I would prefer a three party system in Iraq and in the US of A.
The language is simple and I trust the long years may allow the Iraqis to come to terms with the rest of the world and explore their history.
Democracy is the savior for the extremes and the middle ground as well.
To quote “HLMencken’ on the radio this AM in my words- “The only thing the average denizen wants is to be safe and not be ruled”Â?
It is important to know when you are wrong and accept it. This usually saves lives and a first step to a compromise”¦ does not weaken one’s position because of admission of mistake.
Am glad the “ËœTerminator’(aka AS) is not that’.
I am going to stop watching TV for a few days of well deserved rest!
amen amen amen to rummies departure — who isn’t happy with this news?…
Where is everybody?
I can understand the leftist community here is still busy posting high-five comments on their blogs or spamming Little Green Footballs with “told you sos.”
The confused centrists could be at Daily Kos trying to jump on the bandwagon (careful, it’s about to take a sharp left turn and you will be thrown off into a ditch!)
The far right and the Republican partisans must still be trying to get out of bed and find a reason to go on (I sympathize, after the Mavericks piss poor showing this summer I went into hibernation for a week). Wait til they find out about Rumsfeld and the Senate.
That leaves the question… where is everybody else? (obviously some, like tdaxp could give a fuck as long as college football is on – btw hilarious stuff).
This lonely independent is horribly disappointed by the lack of discussion across the non-partisan blogosphere over the smorgasboard of news.
Rommel, I’d have to say even the centrists are pretty happy with Rumsfeld’s departure. Hell, even most of the Right hasn’t exactly bent over backwards to defend the guy lately.
Was it all Rummie’s fault? Nope. While I was certainly no fan, I don’t think I’m alone in thinking he was kind of set up as a lightning rod.
I’m thinking his resignation gives the administration a way to start talking more seriously about a pullout. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the GOP put up an increasingly anemic fight against rapid steps toward getting out of Iraq if the Dems go ahead and push for it. The Democratic wins could actually give the White House a little political relief. They’ve made some stupid decisions, but they’re not stupid. They know the GOP’s success over the next few years depends on them being able to extricate themselves, and the country, from this debacle.
Glad to see him gone finally. His misleadership, utter detachment from reality and inability to reject the China war hawks deadly advice all made the Pentagon an excellent target for regime change. Now if only some of the crappy generals and other civilian figures could be cleared out as well…..
I have mixed feelings on the guy, but felt two things led to his ouster. Firstly his idea to shrink the military down into a “robust ” SpecOps outfit that would jump around the world at a moments notice putting out fires was a mistake. Nothing wrong with having that capability but I don’t think abandoning the two simultaneous wars doctrine or changing the overall focus of the Army away from a sustained, heavy ground war of the future was a wise move.
Despite the current nature of the wars we are fighting, nothing says that massive state vs. state engagements are purely a thing of the past. Retooling the military around the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is shortsighted IMO.
The second problem is that many higher ups in the military (especially in the Army) were getting to the point where they were openly flouting Rumsfelds orders and directives. Either they had to go or Rumsfeld had to. Bush chose the brass, let’s see how it works out.
