"As someone who supported the invasion of Iraq", he should be well aware of its eventual role in exposing American weakness. The only way that a threat of force - real force - can be credible now is if the US leadership starts behaving erratically, kookoo-go-nuts, using the "Chewbacca defense" in international fora, etc. Because as long as the US pretends to be rational, military action against Iran would be seen as not credible and thus safely ignored.
