Last year, I profiled General Butt Naked, the Liberian “general” who led his cannibalist militia of drug-crazed teenagers into battle stark naked. (If you want the gory details, click the link in the last sentence.) In the general’s own words, “We were nude, fearless, drunk and homicidal.” But fortunately, General Butt Naked was saved by Jesus, and he’s now a preacher in Liberia (the last I heard).

We recently recieved an email here at Coming Anarchy from someone who recently met the former General, and I’m glad to pass on the news that he is alive and well.

Regarding your content on General Butt Naked, now known as Evangelist Joshua, I know the information is true in so far as he killed many in Liberia and engaged in traditional African religons before converting to Christianity after a vision. I’ve meet and spoken to him on two occassions whilst working in Liberia and Ghana for Mercy Ships, the international Christian hospital ships. (Incidently he told me that at the same time he recieved this vision a church congregation were directed by what may have been an angel to pray for him.)

I’ve just returned from working with them in Ghaha,where Joshua has been working as an evangelist amongst Liberian refugees. He became a Christian and it changed his life and now he tells others his story hoping to prevent other young men turning out like him. He is even willing to go to prison for his former deeds as he knows without justice for men like him the future of Liberia is shaky. He is a remarkable man, living under the forgiveness of Jesus – otherwise how else could you live under the weight of such guilt, knowing you ate the organs of innocent children? And how could I have dinner with such a man, but for the fact that I know God loves him as much as he loves me… and if I don’t forgive Joshua his sins, God won’t forgive me…

Keep General Butt Naked Joshua in your prayers. If a human flesh-eating homicidal maniac can be converted into an ordinary God-fearing civilian with nothing more than a phone call from Jesus, maybe there is hope for Liberia after all.
