Alec, I disagree that that was what I was saying. I do agree that people don’t need celebrities to tell them what to think, cause many celebs are just idiots. But I really don’t think it’s a good idea to blanket condemn Americans in general. Americans can do whatever they want and who am I to say that they make bad choices? Hopefully, they make their choices according to their own tastes and needs, whether I agree or disagree is irrelevant.

Please don’t be like many on the left who say they care about ‘the people’ and yet easily fall into the trap of ridiculing the people for being stupid. It sounds too much like the old idea of ‘we know what’s good for you’.

For example, I have an uncle who is far left, who criticized me for teaching English to Koreans (cultural imperialism). Yet, he would tell Koreans “no, you don’t want to learn English, it will destroy your language and culture and it’s evil”. Meanwhile, Koreans are desperate to learn English (or to help their children learn English). So this arrogant commie wants to dictate to people in other countries that they not learn English, because it’s bad for them. To me, that’s complete arrogance.

Germanious: I completely agree, CA is definitely a very good self-contained environment. My point about opinions is that someone with the above qualifications would be more likely to provide a qualified opinion than Joe Blog. I don’t trust politicians and I also do not trust the common man. Everybody, to the progressive think tank mobile! (also known as my Toyota).

Yah, they may listen to George Clooney. But if it wasn’t George Clooney it would be someone just as stupid or self-righteous. How many people listen to Edward Said or Kaplan versus O’Reilly or Anderson COOPER? I think the basic principle you touch upon is: we don’t need celebrities telling people what to think, because Americans are dumb enough on their own.

I’m certainly no expert, but I doubt many Hollywood celebs know more than me, and that’s not saying much. Judging by the idiotic statements so many of them have made. What’s the difference? Nobody listens to me, many people listen to George Clooney.

Alec, the blogosphere is certainly contaminated with self-importance but I must say it doesn’t show up as much on CA as elsewhere. To paraphrase a former mayorial candidate of NYC, I would rather have policy decided by those chosen at random from the Manhattan phone directory than all those having “. . .a law or masters degree or significant experience in politics or foreign development or policy. . .” Those having “significant experience in politics” currently infests the halls of Congress and, as some wag said ages ago, the opposite of “Progress” is “Congress.” {I think it was H.L. Mhenkon–sp?, but I’m not sure.]Fortunately, this random sampling would greatly reduce the choice of “celebrities” foisting their wisdom on we lesser mortals.

Just because I have a sweet domain name doesn’t mean I’m a celebrity OR nuts. And I was being facecious. And, also, unless you have a law or masters degree or significant experience in politics or foreign development or policy (which you may), celebrities probably know as much as you. Don’t forget, the blogosphere is as contamonated with self-importance and self-righteousness as Hollywood (except we get less attention).

Are you nuts? No politician is worth that. Not even Stalin. Let’s not get overdramatic here. Is it because many on the left are from the field of entertainment that we get such use of dramatics in the decrying of Bush and other conservatives? It’s little more than a joke to me. I just can’t take celebrities and other public figures seriously, especially when they talk about politics and other such things they know absolutely nothing about.

I wouldn’t sum it up as Australia being anti-American. Most Aussies are pro-American due to shared history and culture and just like America they are split down the middle on what they think about President Bush. She could have given that speech in a US university and probably would have gotten a even bigger applause.

“Insane Bush Hatred” is indulged in by a certain type of progressive as a sort of tribal marker. They mark themselves out as special, insightful sensitive people, far above the common ruck of ignorant “Archie Bunker” types (that’s most of the rest of us) by indulging in these ridiculous orgies. Orwell’s “Two-Minute Hate” in 1984 comes to mind.

I look forward to the end of Bush’s second term to just to see these progressives flounder, at a loss for an enemy.
