Mock dogfights?

Greek, Turkish Fighter Jets Collide in Aegean Sea, Greece Says

Greek and Turkish fighter jets collided in the southern Aegean Sea, a spokesman for the Greek Air Force said, confirming a report carried by Sky News. The collision occurred about 10 miles east of the Greek island of Karpathos, spokesman Yiannis Papageorgiou said in a telephone interview. Greece has begun a search and rescue operation to see if there are any survivors, he said.

Greek fighter jets were scrambled to recognize and intercept a plane that had entered the Athens Flight Information Region without previous notice, Papageorgiou said. Greek and Turkish fighter jets often conduct mock dogfights over the Aegean Sea, which lies between the two countries. Greece and Turkey, which are at loggerheads over a series of sovereignty issues, disagree about air space limits over the Aegean.

Nobody was immediately available at the press office of Turkey’s general staff to comment on the reports.
