A current article in the Asia Times discusses Burmese paranoia. According to the Junta, the US is planning to invade, possibly with Thailand as well.
Office in Yangon delineates three ways in which the United States might invade Myanmar – through agitating its citizens, in an alliance with insurgents and ceasefire groups or through a multinational coalition-led invasion. The Burmese-language document, which is more than 40 pages in length, is stamped “Top Secret”.[...] The document also indicates that the Tatmadaw has been closely studying US military strategy and operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and is preparing an “Operation Other No War” plan (as the document’s English-language translation calls it) to defend against a possible US invasion through a war of attrition. Exact details of the defensive contingency plan are not included in the document, however.
While the US Department of Defense and Russian Ministry of Defense struggle to accept the threats that will face them in the coming century, even countries like Burma get it. The United States may be unbeatable in conventional warfare, but its becoming less and less important. Hopefully, DoD can kick its obsession with 3GW and adapt to the current generation before 5GW arrives.

Matt added these pithy words on 30 Apr 06 at 3:22 pmIn defense of 3GW, at present its effectiveness is constrained by concern for human rights. If the US were to take the approach of Mongolian conquerors of Asia and threaten that any village that put up a mote of resistance would cause every person in that village to be killed, then 3GW would work just fine. After they put the threat into practice and vividly made some examples, that is.
Of course, I know this is not realistic in a world where public opinion matters.
