A recent adition to the blogroll is the Laika the Space Dog blog (for the genesis, read this). The blog is relatively new and there’s no ‘About’ page, but the blog’s mission appears to be displaying bizarre Soviet military hardware and other retro curiosities. Some recent examples include:
The world’s largest cannon (never shot in anger):

The ten engine “Caspian Sea Monster”:

The largest non-tread tank ever built:

Somethings beginning to tell me it wasn’t just Reagan’s military buildup that bankrupted the Kremlin.

BANG
Elizabeth added these pithy words on 29 Apr 06 at 12:26 pmThe cannon and tank were built before communism… Though communism has its own absurdities to answer for.

Mitch H. added these pithy words on 02 May 06 at 4:46 pmCatholicgauze: since the Soviets were building tens of thousands of T-34s for those hundreds of Tiger tanks, I think they mostly came out ahead in the game. And it was a German who built the Maus.
Alex added these pithy words on 03 May 06 at 2:56 pmand “our version of the Spruce Goose” was built 15 or so years after Stalin died. Still, it’s just Yurp, right? All same-same. PS, Soviet military expenditure didn’t rise during the 1980s, and the Big 5 US equipment projects ( Tomahawk, B-1, Abrams, AH-64, LA Class sub) were commissioned by the Carter administration.
So, apart from that, not bad.
