Back from Italy

I returned from Italy at 6am this morning after having a fabulous trip and a horrible time getting back to Germany. I flew to Bologna and from there took the train north east to the small town where my friend lives. On Thursday I visited Padua and spent Friday walking around Sacile. Saturday my friend and I went out to the country a few kilometers from the coast to meet two friends of his who took us out to lunch and later took us to Aviano, a huge USAF base in the north. The next day we went to Venice and I returned home Monday. Well, actually I should have until my train was delayed 2 hours by a suicide further up the line which caused me to miss my flight and take the train to Milan and then the night train back to Stuttgart where I arrived a little past 6a.m.

All in all, it was a truly fabulous time filled with amazing food, good weather, gorgeous cities and most importantly, quality time with a close friend. Below are a selection of photos from the trip and I’ll have a more in-depth post on Aviano in the next few days.

Beautiful pictures, really. Venice has long been on my must-see list, but I suppose I should add Sacile to my unconfirmed future travel plans.

Great pictures. I still remember studying Shakespeare and his references to Padua and other Italian cities. Gotta get over there eventually and enjoy it as you have.

Sacile is just another small town of 20,000 or so (though I don't know where they all are) about 1 hour north east of Venice. For a random small town, it's actually gorgeous.

Curzon: Venice is fabulous but try to pick mid winter to visit. Even when I went there were hordes of tourists and my Italian friend said that that was nothing. Venice is like Lenin's corpse. People still flock to see it but it's lost all its inner life and is merely a "beautiful" shell.

Agree with Chirol about the timing of a visit to Venice. In mid-summer, the sinking city is a nightmare: stinky, crowded, and expensive. Yet in the winter and early spring, or late fall, it's fabulous.

bc99: My friend's girlfriend suggested using a flame thrower to remedy the problem. The worst part is that people are allowed to sell bird food there increasing the problem.

In Tokyo, pigeons (and especially crows) are considered vermin in the same category as rats. I wonder if the Western/Latin affinity for birds, and habits such as selling bird food to encourage them, originates in the Roman pagan religion, where any unusual movement of birds was considered to be omens delivered from the Gods?
