Via Joe comes this photograph snapped en route to Osaka, where he flew last weekend. Beautiful.

Over the centuries, there have been countless haiku poems written about Mt. Fugi. The most famous haiku poet was zen-monk Matsuo Basho. My recollection is that he never wrote a poem about Mt. Fugi. Many people asked him to write a Fugi poem, but he never did. Finally, late in his life he wrote one:

misty rain.
the day when I don’t see Mt. Fuji:
most fascinating!

Thanks for the link and the kind words, Lord Marquess.

Overcast days are the ugliest days to be on the ground, but the most beautiful days to fly. I was stuck on the ground in Tampa a couple of years ago while a thunderstorm passed over. Once we finally got airborne and broke through the clouds, even the bitching New Yorkers in the row behind me were agog at the view. Of course, after we touched down in another overcast city, everyone was nice and grumpy again.

I endorse Joe’s comment; the first time I ever flew, out of the UK in December, it had been grey and overcast for weeks. It was a true joy to see the sun above the clouds…
