Interview by a Dead Mujahid

Even in death, tdaxp defies us and has managed to land an interview with Thomas Barnett!

The tdaxp Interview of Thomas PM Barnett

Tom Barnett is an author of three books (his Harvard PhD dissertation, The Pentagon’s New Map, and Blueprint for Action), an important grand strategist, and a Harvard PhD (. Recently I asked him to answer some questions for a class I am taking on creativity, talent, and expertise. I only expected short answers, and I promised him that what I was asking him was for class-use only.

I was blown away by his public answers to the questionnaire, and delighted that he used the chance to mention tdaxp. Here’s a sample:

Many thanks, Chirols.

Rumors of my death have been exaggerated. These are petty lies spread in retaliation for the blog's succulent generosity.

Why is that Coming Anarchy always seems to have a relevant post when I'm finishing a book? I'm almost done with "The Pentagon's New Map." Now this. How is it you're reading my mind?

Hope you're enjoying PNM, it's probably the most important book to come out since 9/11and is required reading for all CA readers!

Is Chirol denigrating the importance of Curzon's God Kaplan? The shock! The horror! The 5GW!

Lord no! In terms of grand strategy and the post 9/11 threat environment it is. But until Barnett spends some time in the Gap, he'll always be another academic!

I wonder how long he spent in Moscow? Does anyone know offhand?

i spent a year in Moscow one summer ;-)

but seriously, here's the relevant passage from the interview (how closely did you read it, Younghusband?)

summer in Soviet Union in 1984, two-week seminar with young pols from around world in Austria in 1992, week-long high-level trips to Moscow and India, the month in China, and a month in Central America doing intell stuff, a week teaching at the Norwegian Naval Academy
not significant Gap-time, unless you count Indiana ;-)
