Choice Quotes

Here are two choice quotes heard in conversation over the past few days.

1.) In a discussion ranking the most evil leader in modern history (the three real candidates are Mao, Hitler, and Stalin), a friend had this piece of insight:

“Mao was terrible, but it’s a matter of perspective. For many Chinese he’s the cherry on top of three centuries of shit.”

2.) While debating theology, a friend said this regarding the existence of God:

The short answer yes, with an if. The long answer no, with a but.

I’ll drink to that.

Gods and Monsters

Never has one of my category names been better exemplified (though I didn't necessarily mean "human monsters") than at Coming Anarchy. And yet this post is in another category entirely. Go figure....

Many Chinese do not know about all the wrongdoings of Mao. They only know the propaganda version. If they learned the truth, they would not think that Mao was the "cherry on top". If the Chinese lose faith in Mao, the foundation for the Chinese Communist Party would be seriously eroded.

A very thorough biography, titled "Mao: The Unknown Story", was published last year, written by British and Chinese authors. China, of course, banned the book. A good review of the book can be found on TimeAsia .

As for the quote about God, it's a twist on agnosticism. No one can know God's existence for certain. That's why faith is required of believers.

Those quotes are good and are good discussion material.
