It was the 'seven bridges of Konigsberg' problem that gave rise to graph theory and influenced the development of topology (see e.g. "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_Bridges_of_K%C3%B6nigsberg"). I thought I'd read somewhere that the EU was concerned about smuggling in relation to Kaliningrad, given that now it's surrounded (on land) by EU territory? It was only a year or so ago that I realised that Kaliningrad was called Konigsberg when it was German. So, despite having driven through Kazakhstan a number of times between Samarkand and Tashkent, I can't in good conscience add it to my list.
