It was only a year or so ago that I realised that Kaliningrad was called Konigsberg when it was German. It was the 'seven bridges of Konigsberg' problem that gave rise to graph theory and influenced the development of topology (see e.g. "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_Bridges_of_K%C3%B6nigsberg").

I thought I'd read somewhere that the EU was concerned about smuggling in relation to Kaliningrad, given that now it's surrounded (on land) by EU territory?

[...] This time Europe via Coming Anarchy. Although it may thusfar seem that only far-flung and troubled regions are home to many enclaves, Europe, in fact, has many. However, surely to your disappointment, there aren't any border clashes, drug smuggling or international terrorists taking advantage of them. Nevertheless, there are no shortage of them.
Matt, that's cheating! ;) My guideline is that if you took a piss outside of an airport, train, or bus station, you've been there. So, despite having driven through Kazakhstan a number of times between Samarkand and Tashkent, I can't in good conscience add it to my list.

Chief, you're talking about the Northwest Angle, right? That was one of the answers to my trivia question from a while back. The other one is Point Roberts, WA.

Like the Croatia/Bosnia map. I've actually been to Dubrovnik, having taken the bus down from Split and right through the little Bosnian town. Ever since, I've included my ten minute sojourn in Bosnia whenever I try to impress people by telling them how many countries I've visited, ha.

There is a "chimney" of US territory extending from northern Minnesota into Manitoba. Also, the 49th parallel crosses an island that is shared by Canadians in the north and Americans in the south.
