In September 2004, I spent 30 days in Turkey and Cyprus. Flying into Istanbul, I made my way south towards the coast and eventually took the ferry to Northern Cyprus where I learned more about the Cyprus conflict and also had the chance to visit the last divided capital in the world, Nicosia. I took hundreds of pictures, enjoyed all that Turkish cuisine had to offer and tried to come to a better understanding of the thousands of years of history piled on top of each other in Turkey and Cyprus. Without further ado…

Chirol,

Those are some beautiful photos.

I was wondering however if you knew the stories behind those pictures in that “Anti-Turkish propaganda” wall? Really brutal stuff-I don’t even want to see those videos again…

I’m also puzzled why at times you seem like quite the Turkey-apologist.

Hi,
this is offtopic – would it be possible to obtain WordPress Theme of your site! It’s so cool.. (changing of the graphics and link to your page as “based on ComingAnarchy” is guaranteed.)

Alexander Karatis,
If you knew bad stories behind all nations in the world you would find yourself promoting hate against everybody.

You should go to Turkey -you might understand why someone can like Turks. You will be suprised how well you will be treated.

I think this conversation reminds us that we all need to be very careful with propaganda. Once signs like those you show in Cyprus are displayed, including the paintings in Ataturk’s museum in Ankara showing Greek Orthodox priests leading atrocities in the Turkish restoration, they gain a pernicious life of their own. No-one can take them down without causing offense to some on their own side, yet almost certainly a majority would rather they not be there”¦ And the US is not immune, with all the MIA/POW flags still flying”¦

Dr. Wallace,

What’s wrong with the MIA/POW flags?

A Turk, actually, I DO like Turks!;-) I have been to Turkey twice and plan on going back many times. I was not criticizing all Turks, nor did I venture or characterizing the occupation regime in northern Cyprus.

I just told CHirol that it’s unfair to dismiss those posters as propaganda since what happenned in those cases is very real, barbarous, and very sad.
