I leave for Saigon in a few short hours. First stop from the east coast is San Francico, where I’ll meet with a good friend flying in from Seattle. We’ll then fly to Hong Kong and then to Ho Chi Minh airport where we’ll meet our contact and prepare for our trek north. It’s been a royal pain packing clothes for this trip; it’s 25/80 in Ho Chi Minh but 5/40 in Tokyo.

The plan has changed a bit since we first confirmed the trip, but the general route is the same. And this is all tentative, subject to changes as things happen on our journey north.

A few points before I go…

  • From Sun Bin, this excellent (albeit dated) NPR series on how China’s neighbors view it: Japan, Vietnam, India, and Korea
  • MutantFrog just got back from the Philippines, photos and stories should be up soon.

King Edward I, or rather, King Edward the Longshanks if you’ve seen Braveheart. You, like Edward, are incredibly smart and shrewd, but you win at any costs…. William Wallace died at his hands after a fierce Scottish rebellion against his reign. Despite his reputation though, Longshanks had the best interests of his people at heart. But God help you if you got on his bad side.

Have a great time in ‘Nam. Be prepared for the hordes of kids trying to sell you packs of gum. Otherwise, it’s a fantastic place to visit. Cheers!

Have fun… as for packing… couldn’t you pick up some cheap winter gear in Shanghai before flying into Japan? You might actually grab something you like, and if not you still left all your heavy gear at home. Ah well, next time. Godspeed, sir.

Interesting. I came across this blog from the design awards. But it looks like you’re doing a very similar route that I did last year! here’s my route, are you stopping in HCM?
