My impression is that this is going to be a futile election, returning results similar to the last one. The Liberals will still be in the plurality, but still in the minority as well. The last numbers I’ve seen are 36-31, Liberals over Conservatives, with the Bloc Quebecois and the leftist party further behind.

I know that Harper and his Canadian Alliance (unless they have changed the name again and I failed to notice) are milking the scandals for all they are worth, but with Canadians so wed to the welfare state, there is little chance that a majority will vote for the Alliance.

Are they still as weak in the east as they used to be? I seem to remember them doing better in Ontario since the union of the two right-of-center parties. Are the separatists still languishing? What do you think?

The Progressive Conservatives and the Canadian Alliance merged in 2003 to form the Conservative Party of Canada.

Like most Canadians I enjoy how things are today (solid growth, surpluses, healthcare, etc.) so I might be one of those wed to the welfare state. Still, I’ll probably vote Conservative with the understanding that as a minority government the conservatives won’t be able to push a conservative social agenda on issues such as abortion, same-sex marriage, or marijuana. I’m also interested in their ideas on further democratizing this country and ammending our relationship with the U.S. Also, the Liberals simply cannot be rewarded for their corruption.

But my guess is the Liberals will win another minority government.

That was what I was about to ask: a new election, but can the Conservatives take power?

It will most likely end up being a minority Liberal government again. Harper has been up to something recently , but that might make some social conservatives move away from him at the same time some middle-grounders move to him.
