Photos of Kazakhstan

I was in New York City last night, meeting with friends who I hadn’t seen in a year and a half—not since they hosted myself (and Roy and Saru of Mutantfrog.com fame) in Almaty, Kazakhstan. It was quite an adventure, and here are a few choice pictures from that trip.

The entrance to the National Mosque. The doorway is about three stories tall.

Timurlane chess! With additional pieces the Elephant, the Camel, the Cannon, and the General!

Horse meat for sale, yum!

Citizens of Almaty

With the population half Muslim and half Russian Orthodox Christian, the Red Cross/Crescent uses both symbols.

The old Parliament, defunct since the national capital was moved to Astana.

This Russian Orthodox church is the largest in the world made entirely out of wood. Even the nails are wood!

The War Memorial, with the church in the background.

Trying to outdo me with pictures of your own eh? =) That horse meat pictures reminds me of Moscow. A friend and I, looking for a flea market, somehow misunderstood and found a meat market complete with unidentifiable organs and various heads tossed on blood soaked newspapers spread out on tables. Mmm!
