The Horror of War

A British soldier jumps from a burning tank which was set ablaze after a shooting incident in the southern Iraqi city of Basra September 19, 2005. Angry crowds attacked a British tank with petrol bombs and rocks in Basra on Monday after Iraqi authorities said they had detained two British undercover soldiers in the southern city for firing on police. On that note, Chirol found an interesting poster in Damascus today picturing an outline of Iraq in the background and a hand crushing a half American, half british flag with blood dripping from it. I haven't seen too many things like this, but still a few. I have to get it translated as I don't fully understand it. Perhaps I'll take a pic and post it tomorrow.

If they have rockets they're not a crowd, angry or otherwise.

In any case, the fact that a Challenger (is it?) is vulnerable to such hand-held weapons is worrying, and certainly somewhat different than the picture painted by profiles such as those of Janes Intelligence. I always wondered how much of the image we have of the western armies is PR and how much is real power.

That's rocks, not rockets!

As for the strength of western armies, what makes troops vulnerable is their refusal to fire on civilians, even when the civilians use brutal, even deadly, force.
