Yes, well many Germans on welfare may be doing better, but I hardly think that's a point to be happy about. After all, somebody else is paying for that welfare. The free ride can't last forever.

Keep in mind though that most of the Germans living on social welfare are still better off than many North-Americans working on two, three or more jobs a day! It is excactly that pictures of cold capitalism, that the right painted on the wall - and lost the election for.

Please recognize my new blog as listed above!

This merely confirms what I've said in the past insofar as the Germans all saying they want change, but then when it comes to actually doing it, they change their minds. Thus the SPD's incredible gain in the last week. I'm at least thrilled the FDP got 10% but it's absolutely disgusting that the left garnered so much support. They'll only ruin their own country.

"No one got a clear mandate":http://www.iroke.de/wp/2005/09/18/an-election-less-ordinary/ , which is by far the biggest problem for any future German government. Last time, Schröder formed a coalition with his SPD on a thin majority just 6000 votes over the CDU. This time... I'd be really surprised if one of the smaller parties ignore what they proclaimed during the campaigns and form a "Traffic Light Coalition", with the SPD or the CDU as major partner.

I feel sorry for Germany. It looks like they'll just sink or at least drift further along the tide of economic anemia and so many seem unwilling to do anything about it. Eventually, when it starts to really hit home (higher unemployment, lower standards of living, further economic decline) Germans will do something about it, I hope and expect, but this turn of events is not a good sign, in my view. All the more reason for Americans to try to keep building their economic powerhouse and to not fall prey too much to the dead end of the over-the-top welfare state.

I've got my eyes on some of the newer additions to the EU for their implementation of flat taxes and other progressive measures (Poland, Romania?). We'll have to see what happens, but I think countries that follow a path of more economic freedom could provide the best examples of where capitalism can go economically in the future-it certainly won't be with Germany's model. Why do so many emerging countries view European welfare states as being the be-all and end-all (I know the South Korean government thinks this way, as do many Canadians)?
