Syria Update 3

Today has to have been the most unique and truly bizarre day of travel in my entire life. This morning I set off with a friend to Quneitra, a Syrian town located with in the UN buffer zone between the Israeli and Syrian parts of the Golan Heights. It lies about 1 hour south west of Damascus and the trip there was around 50 cents. Upon clearing a UN checkpoint, we approached a Syrian one where a Syrian intelligence officer or “tour guide” who spoke only Arabic joined us and hung on to our permit and passports while in the area. Actually, it turned out to be a pretty set “tour.” Yet, the area was startling, a virtual time machine, Quneitra is not much different than it was in 1967. The entire town remains in ruins outside of the UN who moved into one building and have setup camp. Strikingly though, althought our “tour guide” told us nobody lived in the town, we saw two children and around 3 women. It seems one or two families live there in the middle of the rubble. Barely a building is standing and in the near distance, you can see Israeli military installments atop the hill no doubt spying on the Syrians.

Afterwards, I headed back to Damascus and went to the “October War Panorama” which is a Syrian museum dedicated to the Yom Kippur war with Israel in 1973. It was also built with help from the North Koreans. It was like nothing I’ve seen. On the right side of the museum one sees old Syrian jets, tanks and rockets used against those terrible Zionists and on the left side, a collection of wreckage of enemy aircraft and tanks. Inside, one sees perhaps the best movie ever depicting the Syrians taking back the Golan Heights in the beginning of the Yom Kippur war and has old footage of the Syrians taking the Israeli positions and yelling “Allahu Akbar.” Then the movie ends and a light show ensues as the stage in front of the screen is setup to look like a battlefield with trenches, guns etc and very cheesy sound effects set in. It’s the most absolutely pathetic, kitschy and ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen in all of my life. Then one continues up and sees a panorama, a fwe hundred feet in circumference and sits on a round platform which rotates while you sit so you can see the entire picture. It, as others, were pained by North Korea artists. Unfortunately they wouldn’t let me take pictures of that part but it was truly ridiculous. It was like a Dictator’s Disney World.

A destroyed hospital in Quneitra, the sign says “Destroyed by Zionists and changed to shooting target” We walked through the ruins to the top of the hospital for an astounding panoramic view of the Golan.

Inside the above hospital.

More guts of buildings.

UN base inside Quneitra staffed by Austrian and Canadian soldiers.

Graffiti which looks rather intifada-esque.

Destroyed building.

The entrance to the ghost town of Quneitra.

The October War Panorama Museum, inside is the huge panorama where you sit on a circular floor that rotates so you see the entire picture.

Created with the help of the North Koreans.

A shot down Israeli phantom on display.

North Koreans and Syria "in cahoots"?! This starts to sound more and more like "Team America World Police". (I hope you saw that movie!)

Anyway, Lord Chirol, you are one brave man, braver than me, that's for sure!

Fascinating. You're a true TWT (third world traveller) in the Kaplanite tradition, Chirol!

On the other side of the border in the Golan Heights, the scenery is quite stunning. I was there in 1992 when Israel was still something of a "moderate" state.

I'm glad everyone's enjoyed the pictures so much. I have tons more of both areas but thought these were already a lot to post at one time. I also have a bunch more of Bosra which was great.

Heirabbit: I may go see the other side myself.

[...] In the wake of the violence in Damascus and the burning of embassies, I though it prudent to briefly mention my experience in Syria. In the middle of September, I visited the Golan Heights. In order to do so, one needs special permission from the Interior Ministry and has to go there, present one’s passport and the day and time he wants to go. The Syrian Interior Ministry is in the embassy district which looks like another world. Taking a cab or minibus there, one is immediately surprised by newer buildings, street lights and yellow lines draw for lanes in the road (often nonexistant). The parks are green and watered daily, the grass is cut and flowers are tended to, all in stark contrast to the generally run down and filthy city. On top of that, the area is crawling with armed guards. [...]

[...] Iran has already given Syria a vague but fierce security guarantee although Israel denies planning to attack. Nevertheless, neither the Syrians nor this author are putting too much stock in that. More likely, as Stratfor has noted, is that Israel will invade Lebanon by the end of the weekend and try to put and end to Hizballah once and for all. At the same time, moving into Lebanon leaves them vulnerable to a Syrian attack through the Golan Heights. Nevertheless, the Israelis have just as much right to go into Lebanon as we did into Afghanistan, for the same reasons. The real victim here is Lebanon, but not of Israel, of Hizballah. [...]

[...] Failed states exert such an influence. In the past, it was only on their neighbors but today it affects the entire world. Israel just happens to be on some of the worst real estate in the world, a gated community so to say in the middle of a hobbesian ghetto. With pressure on all of their borders from Lebanon, Syria, Gaza and the West Bank, the current violence is no surprise. In fact, after dealing with Hizballah, they’ll certainly setup a new buffer zone betwen Lebanon and Northern Israel. They already have the same thing for Syria, your humble author visited the other side of it last year. [...]
