Syria Update 2

I’ve finally gotten around to posting some pictures. Took forever to upload. Tomorrow I go to Bosra for the day and on Saturday the Golan Heights, got my special permit from the Ministry of the Interior this morning. Without further ado, here are the pictures:

Remnants of the Roman temple to Jupiter outside the Umayad Mosque in old Damascus.

Inside the walls of the Umayad Mosque. Its size is breathtaking. It also houses the remains of Salah ad-Din (Saladin) and Hussein of Shia fame. There were throngs and throngs of Iranians about all wetting their pants with excitement.

The entrance to the Military Museum in Damascus. It houses everything from old damascene swords of fabulous quality to old planes from the various wars with Israel. Below is a gigantic head of the former president Assad.

An old plane which fought in the “Palestine War” in 1948. You’ll notice its sitting on the lawn in from of an old ottoman mosque from the 1500s. Very inappropriate.

Two Israeli motorized vehicles captured by the Syrians.

This sign is hilarious. Two motorized vehicles is all they have to show for their fight against Israel. The museum was one big sore loser memorial:

It's a beautiful place.

I look forward to the day when it is more of an open and free country.

The entrance to that museum is beautiful...
If I was a William Randoph Hearts-type, I'd dare to attempt to model my own "Xanadu" on that.

(Hey, a guy can dream, can't he?)

Glad everyone enjoys them. I'll have many more soon. Bosra was incredible today, the best and most intact Roman ruins I've seen, the ampitheater at least. Tomorrow it's off to the Golan Heights bright and early.

Likeably cornball foreign affairs blog Coming Anarchy has a sideline in travelogues from some of the more hard-to-reach cities out there. TheyÂ've already posted walk-thrus of Damascus (Dig the military museum) and Istanbul—the newest addition is ...
