From reading the article it sounds to me like the whipping was nothing but the whim of the king, and the fact that it occurred at an ancient religious ceremony was just a coicidence.

Difference in culture and mosogynist backward African tradition… in other words, it’s what they do, but it’s OK for us to diagree.

Cultural relativism (or maybe should I say “polylogism”) doesn’t mean you have to acquiesce and just let some people abuse others, just because they don’t call it abuse.

One doesn’t affirm one’s own culture because one has an “objective” reason because it is “better” or “supperior”, but because it is one’s own.
