Oil Platform Damage, July 2005

BP THUNDERHORSE

The BP Thunderhorse—an enormous offshort platform in the Gulf of Mexico—took some damage from Hurricane Dennis. These photos of the rig, and recent efforts by BP and the US Coast Guard to fix the rig, are simply fantastic. Highly recommended if you want to understand the massive machinery involved in getting oil out of the Gulf of Mexico.

ONGC Mumbai Oil Platform
Also, a fire at sea destroyed an oil platform off the coast of Mumbai, India, causing three deaths and leaving 44 missing. The fire broke out around 4.30 p.m when a multi-purpose support vessel hit the riser, which facilitates the pumping of the raw crude from satellite wells to the platform

NOTE: BP stands for British Petroleum, ONGC stands for India’s Oil and Natural Gas Corporation.
