On Japanese TV they show snippets of English TV programs on "how to make Japanese food". The Japanese audience always reacts with huge gasps of disbelief. So in spite of the wonderful proclamations of the "revolution" over the last 20 years, I'll still say the general situation isn't all that great. I've also heard that French food isn't all that awesome, if only because you can't afford anything decent there anyway. People generally rave about Italian and Belgian food.
