Rematch

Japan just qualified for the World Cup finals by defeating North Korea 2-0.

The game was supposed to be held in Pyongyang, but rioting at the last Pyongyang game with Iran motivated FIFA officials to move the game with Japan to neutral territory, namely Bangkok. It was the second time the two rivals met. Both ended with a Japan victory.

The KCNA has yet to report the DPRK’s defeat…

One can only hope the North Korean soccer team does not meet the same fate as the Iraqi soccer team during the reign of Saddam Hussein.

Good to see that the Japanese won despite wearing blue strip......[see Nature 435, p293]. Next time the North Koreans should try wearing red......

How is South Korea doing in the World Cup?

South Korea are FIFA-ranked at 21. They are second in their group now, and will probably go to the Asian finals. I am pretty sure they will make it to Germany next year (they've been in every WC since 1986), but whether or not they get to the semi-finals again (2002) is hard to say.

Was anyone here at the World Cup in Japan/Korea? Reading this post brought back fond memories of attending in Korea.

I'm trying to remember which team it was from Europe that had a ton of fans in Korea, I think it was Ireland... Great group of people, when they lost they immediately decided to support the 'home' team, Korea. They became the darling of the media as well Koreans in general.

Be The Red! heh

Don't forget to mention that this game was held with NO spectators save for those involved with the team and a group of reporters. What a sad state of affairs.
