If instead of an ancient warrior the statue would depict a contemporary Korean man, in a suit and carrying a briefcase, with classes, or maybe hunched over a computer, it would look stupid, right? I think it's equally stupid with an ancient warrior.

Or maybe it's me who is put off by Romantic Realism... maybe.

Anyway, I'm sure it will make for perfect cruise missle target practice.

OK, I have changed my mind. I used to think they were being whiny and shrill, but if this is what the Koreans want to do with Takeshima then they honestly deserve it.

Kinda like the Statue of Liberty, but with less "give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses" and more "our huddled masses will kick your ass".

Saru I'm wagering that is either supposed to be Ulchi-Mundok or Yi sun-sin.

Since it appears to be aimed at Japan, my bets are on Yi.

It looks more like the statues of the ancient kings of Gondor from Lord of the Rings than anything else.

Since the Takeshima dispute is really about controlling the ocean around the islands, why not promise to keep arguing about fishing rights and let the Koreans build their nifty statue?

More information on the Takeshima islands (one of many names) appears elsewhere on the Internet. For example,

1.'Asia Cable' (http://asiacable.blogspot.com/), in a blog headed 'Guide to "Insignificant Islands"', tells us that the two islets encompass an area of only a quarter of a square kilometre.

2. Fuller information, including pictures, is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liancourt_Rocks

But who adjudicates if South Korea and Japan can't agree on ownership?

But who adjudicates if South Korea and Japan can't agree on ownership?

Considering that Korea is sitting on them and doesn't plan on leaving it's pretty much a moot point.

Thanks for the response. The official position in Japan seems to be:

"In September 1954 Japan proposed to the Republic of Korea that the issue should be submitted to the International Court of Justice, but this proposal was rejected by the Republic of Korea." http://www.mofa.go.jp/region/asia-paci/takeshima/position.html

You'd think that most nations would want the present rules changed - after all, territorial disputes must be common. What's stopping the property rules from being made enforceable?

[...] Recently, Russia has been increasingly displaying its dominance in the region. Earlier this month Russia announced a major infrastructure investment drive in the Kuril Islands. With Japan’s attention turned to problems with Korea and China, Russia may be thinking the time is ripe to exert their sovereignty in the “Northern Territories.” Will this lead to military action? I don’t think so. In fact, I think Russia is really hurting itself in the end. By thinking territorially, Russia is locking itself out of a great potential economic relationship, particularly in the energy sector. Through such a relationship Moscow could reap benefits that far outweigh any fishing profits garnered by control of the Kurils. What say you? [...]
