Look at the upheaval in those 85 years. Some nations and kingdoms survived: the Mamelukes in Egypt, the Greeks in Trabizon, the Mediterranean Armenians, and the Venetian colonies. But there was also a lot of change. Serbia expanded to its historical zenith. The Byzantine Empire collapsed, but did not fall. Latin crusaders, who held Cyprus, took Rhodes. Genoese colonies sprung up. And the Mongol Khanate in Anatolia fell while the Ottoman Sultante, which would dominate the region for centuries to come, had its auspicious beginning as a small nation in northwestern Anatolia.

"Sir..."
"Please call me Mr. Despot."
"Yes, Mr Despot. Some say your policies don't keep the people in mind."
"Of course not! This is a despotism! Now off with your head!"
(Yes, yes, I know "despotat" is a Greek term)
