The Black Spot

In keeping with the predictions made here and mentioned again here, Saakashvili has finally come through on his promise.

According to Eurasia.net, Saakashvili has finally let us in on his little secret, namely, which country will be the next to experience a velvet revolution according to him.

Saakashvili also said that GUUAM leaders are ready to help Belarus towards democracy. The chairmanship of the group was also passed from Saakashvili to Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin at the April 22 summit.

Seems the original prediction was pretty accurate. Lukashenko has gotten the black spot.

Black spot aside, we are not pushing democracy for democracy's sake. The US is being opportunist. Push reform on some dictatorship that we're not friends with, and Georgia is/egging us on because they want US support keeping Russia off their turf. We could have targeted some far worse regimes in, some non-allied dictatorships such as Turkmenistan, North Korea, Zimbabwe, Sudan, but Belarus is on Russia's turf and this is just a convenient target. Also, we look good.

So pushing democracy my aristocratic ass! This is geopolitics, pure and simple.

To be honost, the post was rather a good reason to dig up a Treasure Island allusion =) but that aside, I never stated that we were promoting democracy for its own sake. With momentum and public opinion on our side, this is an opportune time to finally knock Russia out of Europe. They've taken hits in all of their major near abroad regions, the Caucasus, Central Asia and Europe and this will be a fatal blow to their European influence, though their almost total control of the natural gas market is another thing. Russia is on the defensive and as long as we ensure it stays that way, we won't have too much to worry about from them.

Geopolitics indeed good Sir!
