Robert Kaplan learns about Coming Anarchy.com – UPDATED

Robert D. Kaplan on C-Span’s Book TV:

INTERVIEWER: This book, The Coming Anarchy, published in 2000, did you know that there is a website based on this book?

KAPLAN: I didn’t know. . .

We asked three questions by email, and I’m halfway through listening to the three hour program. If there are any other mentions, I’ll make sure to upload similar clips. Did I ever mention that the man is a genius? Listen to how he gives us the lowdown on Iraq.

UPDATE: Oh smack! They asked our second question (without giving credit, harumph) about Thomas P. M. Barnett! They used the quotes I dug up! New update as soon as I transcode the MP3.

UPDATE II: Here it is, your moment of zen. . .

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

What a polite man.

He also goes on to describe himself politically: “I’m a moderate, middle-of-the-road conservative.” Interesting.

UPDATE III: Nathan takes on Kaplan from an unrelated angle over at the Argus—Kaplan fans and foes alike, join in the conversation in the comments section.

As a general rule, when someone describes himself as "conservative," I am always very curious about what exactly does he want to conserve. Considering the wealth of traditions and thinking, in the US especially, one can be conservative, for example, as in conserving the spirit of Thomas Jefferson, or conservative in a religious sense. I know that in popular parlance there are clear associations, but I just don't trust this word.

Can someone in the audience please tell me how would you describe this man's views, with more precise terms? ... for my own curiosity. Thank you!

Kaplan's conservatism is basically classical liberalism, and as for conservation, he's opposed to rapid change (reform but not revolution). He's not socially conservative. He could also be labeled a pessimistic realist or a historical realist.

Good job man! Maybe I should have made my site an Reischauer or Karel van Wolferen fansite (though I'm not really a fan of either...)

Once Again on MSNBC

No reflected glory this time! Robin Burk of Random Probabilities and Winds of Change featured Laurence's post on Putin's address alongside this one on the same subject from Joel Gaines of No Pundit Intended.
