A note about the recent controversy on Bush’s Middle East policies and the idea of a “big bang theory” for spreading democracy in the region: There have been countless commentaries on this issue from all sides (including this rather measured take from Slate pundit Fred Kaplan, and this massive Sarcasmo-blast from Thomas Barnett), and I don’t think we will truly “know” what has really happened until we have the hindsight (and the memoirs of Qaddafi, Mubarak et al.) but I would like to get some reader opinions. Can anyone provide more than circumstantial evidence of a link between the Bush Administrations rhetoric and the recent events in the Middle East? Or is this just all a matter of opinion?

Second, NPR had a debate between two scholars on All Things Considered on the topic of whether or not Bush deserves credit. It isn't available on the archives yet, but I'm sure it will be "very soon...
