Two new articles by Kaplan are out, one long account of the US military in Niger in the most recent issue of the Atlantic Monthly and an op-ed from the New York Times. (Registration/subscription is required to access both, sorry.)
These aren’t just standard Kaplan insight. These articles are the first taste of his new book coming out in late summer, Imperial Grunts: The American Military On The Ground. It’s the first in a series of books on how the US military is a force for good in the world, showing where the boots go and the press doesn’t follow, from Mongolia to Niger, to Colombia to Thailand. I for one can’t wait to read it.
The actual date of publication is unclear. Amazon says it’s coming out September 13, the Atlantic says its coming out in August.
P.S. A tip o’ the hat to praktike for the heads up. For all our posts on Robert D. Kaplan, click here.

That said, I might actually have to get around to reading a book of his one of these days.
