I’ve never lived in Washington DC, but Lord knows I want to someday. Along with San Francisco, it’s my favorite city in the US: nice people, nice weather, nice landscape, and an overall fun place.

But Philalawyer has totally rained on my parade, giving a brutal account of post-college graduation life in the city.

Stacy had moved to DC after college to save the world. She worked for a feminist think tank, advocating progressive social policies, regulations and legislative initiatives. She’d told me the central topics of the mental masturbation sessions that went on in her tank, but damned if I can recall it. I’d been a law student during those conversations. I was spending three, sometimes four, maybe even five days a week listening to dreck; I had no intention of paying attention to hers. I’d just stare and smile. “Fascinating” (cue to picture of monkey eating banana and scratching it’s ass above my head).

DC is one of those stop-off cities where a lot of people live for a few years after college. You work at some horribly underpaid job on the Hill or in some quasi-governmental organization for a time and, when your friends start to move and you decide you need to get paid, you leave. It’s a nice place to park your lazy ass for three or four years after school, going out five nights a week without the tests, classes or tuition of graduate school. It’s even alleged to have a 2:1 women to men ratio, and there are many hot young women on the Hill and in the numerous Universities around town.

Brutal, hilarious—some of the best writing on the web. Sit back, relax, and go read the entire 3,000 words of the post for yourself.

My best friend lived in SF and thereabouts for a while after college (Cal), and then moved with his partner to D.C. They love being close to the political action, but find it hard being away from family and old friends. Otherwise, I only hear positive reports!

“But Philalawyer has totally rained on my parade…”

“It’s even alleged to have a 2:1 women to men ratio, and there are many hot young women on the Hill and in the numerous Universities around town.”

This is bad?! :)

No, the women I can deal with. His take on DC —that it’s just a waypoint of post-college life and “growing up”—was a subtle blow to the maturity of anyone who wants to work their after college/grad school/law school (and there are lots of us).

I think we all have to avoid the trap that he talks about—getting ahead of ourselves developmentally. There’s always room for some good old-fashioned pretentiousness, as we all know, but I am all too familiar with “28-year-olds acting like they’re 40”. Bo-ring! People like that have ruined wine for me for the rest of my life. To me it will always be the drink of snobby upper-class wannabes.

Adamu-kun,

“People like that have ruined wine for me for the rest of my life. To me it will always be the drink of snobby upper-class wannabes.”

Nothing like drinking wine out of a box to disabuse oneself of that belief!

We’ll have to try that some time.
