This is the latest post in the “what makes a legimitate news site?” series, this time targetting the “alternative energy” freaks. Otherwise known as the hairy pinkos who want us to abandon technology and return to living in the jungle, their indoctrination tactics have become increasingly effective in recent years as they try to convince us that solar, geothermal, ethanol, wind, and other alternatives sources can replace 78 million barrels of oil and 270 billion cubic feet of natural gas used every day (see video at the end of the post). Their theories have zero scientific basis, and I’m pretty sure the mean greenies are the only Americans less rational than the anti-evolution Christian Right nutcases.

Fortunately, every so often they shoot themselves in the foot with something really, really silly. Pure Energy Systems News came out with this days ago: Indonesian Tsunami Probably Tripped by Exxon-Mobil Works. As evidence they have such undeniable proof as the fact that the Indonesian military helps guard ExxonMobil facilities and some bizarre graph that tries to show a correlation between an increase in major earthquakes with oil combustion over the past century. In a word, zero science combined with baseless fearmongering to justify a pseudo-religious green zeal:

To connect the dots, therefore, we have to link the rapid “harvesting”Â? of subterranean and undersea oil, and the reason for doing so ““ the thirsty tanks of obsolete gas-guzzling vehicles ““ with the consequence of earthquakes and tsunamis. Not only in Asia, but also around the world, are many oilfields with rapidly dropping pressure, into which water is being pumped to extract the last expensive barrels. How many more disastrous quakes will humanity face as the result of this artificially-maintained appetite for fuel?

You are perhaps a little overly harsh; there seems general agreement in the seismology community that human activities can trigger “earthquakes”. albeit ususally rather small ones.
e.g. http://www.norsar.no/seismology/induced/

Blaming the Indonesian tsunami on specific activities may be a great stretch, but it is not unreasonable that oil and gas exploration might be the final “straw that broke the camel’s back” in triggering an inevitable tectonic event. There is good evidence that tides trigger shallow thrust fault earthquakes (Cochran et al., Science 306, 1164-1166, 2004).

There is now a nice discussion from a card-carrying (albeit Californian) geologist on the “pureenergy systems” website. The Indonesian quake was far too deep to have been influenced by near-surface gas exploitation.

I would think that considering their situation, California has a pretty high concentration of good geologists.
