So we were talking about nuking Mecca when Peter, quoting Curzon, asks:
“And no, I’m not conservative either. I’m a raging right-winger.” Eh? Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t that a contradiction?
This reminded me of an interesting take on the political spectrum that was making the rounds a couple years back: The Political Compass. Basically, instead of a philisophical arc of continuity the compass charts political thought in four quadrants using the y-axis as a measure for views on social freedoms and the x-axis for economic freedoms. It seems to be a variation of the Nolan Chart and produces interesting results that reflect the sometimes ambivalent positions that can be taken in today’s complex political landscape. Go ahead and take the test and I am sure your ideas on the traditional political spectrum will change. Feel free to link to your results in the comments.
Also, a couple of years back in real life Curzon wrote a great explanation of the five political cultures in the US today, which I thought was really poignant. It illustrated how very loaded the terms “liberal” and “conservative” are in America. Maybe if I ask very nice he can post it for all of us…

As for my book, Mr. Younghusband, I'm reformatting it for post-2004 and will resubmit it to publishers. But we should post a section of it here on the blog, and I'll work on that.

Though I don't like some of the questions in the test, or at least the sense that if you didn't agree with a statement, you inherently agreed with its anti-statement. Often I felt my opinion was on a third route...
I wonder how they are weighted?

A little less left, and a little more libertarian, than Ghandi if the scales are the same!
But of course many of the questions are far too silly to answer so simply... I agree with Younghusband that it is fatuous to think that if one doesn't agree with a statement, one inherently agrees with its anti-statement. Fortunately the world is much more interesting.....

Interesting to note that out of the people on thir chart, my position is closest to that of the Dalai Lama. Somehow I find that kind of surprising for the heir to a country which was a hardline theocratic dictatorship for a good thousand years.

I normally consider myself a Right libertarian, so er.....
The problem with the survey is that it doesn't distinguish between vertical and horizontal controls. Just because I think something is wrong and should be discouraged doesn't mean I think it should be banned.

...though in agreement with the objections already made above. I think another important difference, at least for myself, is the difference between domestic and foreign policy. I tend to be much further right in foreign policy matters and then mildly left on domestic ones.

I agree with Chirol's points but still must say I beat Curzon.
