Well, I am off to the airport and will be soon on my way to Tehran via Dubai. Needless to say I am very excited. With “nuclear talks”:http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=worldNews&storyID=6735025&src=rss/worldNews§ion=news abound and a “IAEA deadline”:http://www.spacewar.com/2004/040924220700.2y9scbh1.html on the horizon Iran must be a very interesting place to be right now.
In preparation for this trip I picked up a wonderful book by New America Foundation Fellow “Afshin Molavi”:http://www.newamerica.net/index.cfm?pg=Bio&contactID=720 titled “Persian Pilgrimages: Journeys Across Iran”:http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0393051196/qid=1099815192/sr=2-1/ref=pd_ka_b_2_1/103-1263823-9555060. Written in a fluid style reminiscent of Robert D. Kaplan (a former New America Fellow), this book is simultaneously informative and insightful, intertwining both historical fact and cultural ambiguity. I highly recommend this for people interested in Iran.
In the meantime, checkout Molavi’s article on “Iran and the China Model”:http://www.newamerica.net/index.cfm?pg=article&DocID=2031 which brings up a number of salient points about a topic that is very much on the horizon.
My next post, will be from Tehran.
