Earlier this year after returning from Chinese Turkestan, and my first meaningful encounter with Islam, I took a much greater interest in Islamic culture. One of the (many) things I came to appreciate was was art and design, particularly the calligraphy. After having a stab at learning Arabic script my respect for these artists increased a thousandfold.
Take a look at this piece (at right) by Sudanese artist Hassan Musa. Amazing…
The British Museum is currently running an exhibition on Sudan featuring this artist and more. Take a look at the site to learn more about Sudan’s history, also read about the current conflict between Africans and Arabs in Sudan.
