From The Economist:

The UN fretted that a proposed 3,000-5,000-strong African Union peacekeeping force would arrive too late, and with too few resources, to curb further atrocities in the Sudanese region of Darfur. Médecins sans Frontières said that the world’s response to the ethnic cleansing of 1.5m Darfuris by the Sudanese government and its allied militias was “shameful”Â?.
Who would or could make up such a force? The Nigerians? The Zambians? The Senegalese? The South Africans?
UPDATE: Turns out only two countries have committed to sending troops: Nigeria and Rwanda. I get the former—the Nigerians probably have the best army in Africa—but the Rwandans? I guess it’s personal… having experience with genocide getting ignored and all. But do they have what it takes?
UPDATE II: Totally fascinating blog on the Sudan here!
